The report entitled "Developing a network of excellence" elaborated by Censis foundation on behalf of Regional Transplantation Centre and Lazio Regional Agency for Transplantations and Related Pathologies was presented on March 31th, 2008 at the headquarters of Lazio Region in Rome.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the current system of organ and tissue donation in Lazio considering the peculiarities of the structures operating in the Region and through a comparison with the realities of the Regions in the vanguard at national level.

The meeting saw the participation of prestigious personalities in the field of transplantations such as Prof. Carlo Casciani, President of Lazio Regional Agency for Transplantations and Related Pathologies, Prof. Salvatore Di Giulio, Vice President of the same Agency, Prof. Giuseppe Roma, President of Censis, On. Augusto Battaglia, Health Councillor, Prof. Alessandro Nanni Costa, Director of National Transplant Centre, Prof. Domenico Adorno, Coordinator of Regional Transplant Centre. Prof. Giuseppe Roma underlined that in Lazio region there are great differences due to the concentration of structures of excellence in the area of Rome and the persistence of more complex situations in some peripheral areas.
The report evidences that the activity levels of great hospitals in Lazio are similar to those recorded in Tuscany and Emilia Romagna while the performances furnished by little and medium hospitals are considerably lower.

A turning point in order to increase activity levels was represented by the regional resolution adopted in 2006 that introduced the Coordination Offices, redefining and widening the role of local Coordinators within the procurement activity.
Prof. Carlo Casciani reminded that a centre unique of pathological anatomy to evaluate transplant suitability has already been set up and a new telematic network able to send electroencephalographic parameters to certain hospitals will be launched shortly.
